The Substation Design Engineers is responsible for leading and managing the electrical engineering design function for substation and power distribution projects. This includes overseeing the preparation, review, and approval of designs for HV, MV, and LV systems in compliance with applicable standards, utility/Private customer/Consultant’s specifications, and project requirements. The role ensures the timely and efficient execution of engineering deliverables while optimizing resources, maintaining quality, and mitigating risks.
Key Responsibilities:
A. Design Management:
Lead and co-ordinate the design of AIS/GIS substations (11kV–400kV) switchyards, and distribution systems.
Manage preparation of SLDs, layout drawings, schematics, wiring diagrams, earthing
and lighting designs, cable schedules, and BOQs.
Ensure design compliance with IEC, IEEE, IS, and utility/customer-specific standards.
Review and approve design deliverables including vendor documents.
Support in preparation of technical bid documents such detailed BOM, Tender SLD &
Layout, GTPs, Deviations & Clarifications, and design-related clarifications for tenders.
Attend FAT / SAT of primary / secondary equipment system as and when needed.
Use creativity wherever appropriate to provide best solutions for the given situation
within the framework of tender/project.
Continuously develop standard templates and databases for tender engineering & Project Engineering.
Guide and motivate team members in their roles.
Perform Quarterly & Half yearly PMI with the team members.
B. Project Execution Support:
Interface with project management, procurement, and construction teams for design related inputs.
Ensure engineering deliverables meet project timelines and milestones.
Provide technical support during procurement, FATs, site installation, testing, and
commissioning phases.
C. Team Leadership & Development:
Manage and mentor a team of electrical design engineers and CAD technicians.
Allocate work, monitor progress, conduct design reviews, and implement
training/development programs.
Encourage the adoption of best practices, design automation, and digital engineering
tools.
D. Stakeholder & Client Engagement:
Interact with clients, consultants, statutory bodies, and utility companies for design
approvals and reviews.
Support business development teams with technical presentations and client
interactions.
Job Profile
E. Quality, Safety, and Compliance:
Ensure adherence to internal quality assurance processes and ISO standards.
Identify design-related risks and implement mitigation strategies.
Promote safe design practices in accordance with safety-in-design principles complying to CEA guidelines.
3. Key Deliverables:
Approved and issued-for-construction electrical design packages.
Client and statutory approvals on electrical design submissions.
As-built documentation and final project engineering dossiers.
Efficient design planning, meeting deadlines, and managing cost-effective solutions.
Required skills:
Strong understanding of electrical systems: HV/MV/LV switchgear, transformers,
CT/PTs, circuit breakers, relays, earthing, lightning protection, protection & control
schemes.
Proficiency in design tools: AutoCAD, Revit, ETAP, or equivalent.
Knowledge of international and Indian codes and standards (IEC, IEEE, IS, CEA,
CBIP).
Understanding of SCADA, control & protection panel design.
Risk Assessment & Mitigation.
Good communication, both verbal and written (English).
Organisational skills and ability to pick up work right away.
Collaboration with project stakeholders and ability to interact and influence
stakeholders at an appropriate level.
Self-driven approach.
Problem solving ability with adherence to deadlines and tight timelines.
