Position
Position Title: OJL Trainer-Coach-Assessor – Mechanical
Location: Nigeria – USAN FPSO
Reports to: Training Coordinator
Work Pattern: Offshore rotational – 3 weeks on / 3 weeks off (back-to-back)
Purpose of the Role
Operating within the PACE maintenance contract on the USAN FPSO, the Mechanical OJL Trainer-Coach-Assessor will provide practical on-the-job training, coaching, mentoring, and competency assessment to Mechanical maintenance technicians and supervisors.
The position holder will assess each candidate's ability to safely, repeatedly, and consistently perform the tasks associated with their Mechanical maintenance role and career stage, in accordance with the required standards of performance.
The role will also contribute to the development of local technical capabilities through structured knowledge transfer, competency development, and targeted training programs.
Key Responsibilities
Mechanical Training & Competency Development
Identify Mechanical competency gaps through job task analysis, competency reviews, appraisal schemes, and consultation with Mechanical supervisors and discipline leads.
Develop and deliver structured On-the-Job Learning (OJL) programs for Mechanical maintenance personnel.
Provide practical coaching and mentoring to technicians and supervisors.
Support individual competency progression and career development.
Identify opportunities for technical knowledge transfer and continuous improvement.
Design and deliver advanced Mechanical training courses when required.
Mechanical Maintenance Coaching
Coach personnel in the safe and effective execution of Mechanical maintenance activities.
Provide practical guidance on maintenance techniques, equipment operation, troubleshooting, inspection, repair, and overhaul activities relevant to the FPSO environment.
Reinforce correct maintenance practices, procedures, and safety requirements.
Observe work execution and provide constructive technical feedback.
Promote a strong culture of quality, reliability, and safe work practices.
Competence Assessment & Verification
Conduct practical and on-site competency assessments for Mechanical technicians and supervisors.
Assess candidates against defined competency standards and career-stage requirements.
Review and validate supporting evidence submitted by candidates.
Ensure assessments and verification activities comply with applicable international standards.
Maintain accurate assessment records and competency documentation.
Support assessment activities in coordination with the Training Coordinator, Mechanical discipline leads, maintenance trainers, and PACE project personnel.
Skills Designer & Documentation
Record training and assessment activities in the Skills Designer Competence Management System.
Upload and maintain supporting evidence for completed assessments and training.
Ensure competency records are complete, accurate, traceable, and properly archived.
Provide regular feedback and reporting on competency development and identified gaps.
QHSSE & Offshore Compliance
Ensure all training and assessment activities comply with PACE/VINCI and Oil & Gas QHSSE standards.
Ensure compliance with Permit-to-Work requirements and applicable offshore safety regulations.
Integrate safe working practices into all Mechanical training and assessment activities.
Ensure personnel demonstrate the required safety-critical competencies before being considered competent.
Immediately escalate any unsafe condition or competency concern.
Stakeholder Interface
Work closely with the Training Coordinator to develop and review Mechanical training programs.
Interface with Mechanical supervisors, maintenance leads, discipline trainers, and PACE project staff.
Provide recommendations regarding competency gaps and workforce development.
Operate independently offshore while maintaining effective communication with the wider management team.
Qualifications & Experience
Required
Experienced and motivated Mechanical trainer with a strong commitment to developing technical talent.
Strong Mechanical maintenance background within the Oil & Gas industry.
Minimum 12 years of experience with an Oil & Gas multinational Operator or Service Company.
Previous experience in a Mechanical supervisory or lead role.
Minimum 3 years of active training experience, preferably in On-the-Job Training/Learning.
Proven experience in coaching, mentoring, and assessing Mechanical maintenance technicians.
Oil & Gas production operations or maintenance experience.
Broad exposure to industrial plant and process equipment.
Ability to work independently in an offshore environment.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to deliver practical and classroom-based training.
Preferably recognized competence assessment experience or qualification such as A1/L9DI/V1 or equivalent.
Desired
Previous FPSO or offshore production facility experience.
Assessor or Verifier qualification.
Knowledge of international training and competency assessment standards.
Experience with auditing.
Experience with competence management systems.
Experience supporting local workforce development and nationalization programs.
